THYME WATER Thyme is the dried flowering and leafy branches of Thymus species. Thymus species are perennial plants with small leaves, strong and pungent odors, and white or pink flowers. They are generally found in clusters on dry hills and ridges. Thyme contains volatile oils, bitter substances, and tannins. According to some sources, thyme has calming, antiseptic, anthelmintic, and blood circulation-boosting effects. Although its general use is as a spice, thyme water and thyme oil are also frequently consumed. Thyme water is obtained from the flowering branches of some Origanum species growing in the plateaus of Western and Southeastern Anatolia by steam distillation. Thyme water contains small amounts of phenolic compounds. Thyme water has been used for many years. Especially during the Ottoman period, thyme water was sold by itinerant vendors in the streets of Istanbul. It was known as a cough suppressant and expectorant.
